HMS Perseus: The story of the sole survivor of a British submarine sunk in 1941 off Kefalonia, Ionian Sea, Greece

An incredible -yet true- story comes back to life through the book of Kostas Thoctarides and Rena Giatropoulou regarding the  legendary submarine «HMS Perseus».

The book, published by the Hellenic Maritime Museum, contains 150 photos, documents for the loss of the submarine, and digital photos of "Perseus" exactly as it is lying on the seabed.

With the assistance of the Company for Tourist Development and Promotion of the island of Kefalonia and Skala Community, the research team identified and recorded on film for the first time since the sinking by an Italian mine on December 6, 1941, of the British submarine "HMS Perseus", at a depth of 52 meters.

The naval tragedy that claimed the lives of 60 officers and sailors, including the Greek Lieutenant Nicolaos Merlin, became widely known thanks to the perseverance of Greek divers and the detailed historical research by Ms. Rena Giatropoulou.

The sole survivor
A single sailor, stoker John Cape, managed to escape from the sunken submarine and after an Odyssey that lasted for months, Cape found himself in Alexandria, Egypt.

The identification of the submarine, almost 60 years later, was based in part on the testimony of the sole survivor. The experienced diver Kostas Thoctarides notes: "When I first saw the picture of the submarine on the sonar display, my heart leaped"

"A wreck is not just a mass of steel, but has many human stories. We approached respectfully, in order not to disrupt the final resting place of the 60 souls who drowned that night of December 6, 1941.

I feel a moral obligation and ask divers not to remove anything from the wreck".

The "Perseus" is resting on the sandy bottom, almost upright, with a slight right tilt 18 degrees.

The hole  that was caused by the explosion of the mine is visible on the left side of the bow, the only visible damage to the steel hull with a length of almost 90 meters.

The manhole from which John Cape escaped  is still open while inside the submarine broken instruments and clutter attest to the violence of the explosion that sank "Perseus".

Today many certified recreational divers visit the wreck of the "Perseus", which is now a popular diving destination in Kefalonia.

The remains of the drowned sailors are scattered across the submarine's floor

The identity of Perseus
The submarine HMS PERSEUS was designed in 1927 and built in England, shipyards Vickers - Armstrong in 1930. Type: PARTHIAN
Length: 88.4 meters
Displacement 1,475 tons on the surface and 2,040 tons submerged.

Γιατί επιλέχθηκε η 28η Οκτωβρίου;

Πότε ξεκίνησες τους επιχρωματισμούς  και ποιο το πρώτο σου έργο;

Έχεις αδυναμία σε κάποια συγκεκριμένη ιστορική περίοδο και αν ναι γιατί;

Πόση ώρα σου παίρνει συνήθως ο επιχρωματισμός και ποια είναι τα "εργαλεία" σου;

Πόσο πιστός στην πραγματική εικόνα παραμένεις;

Ποιο είναι το αγαπημένο σου δημιούργημα;

Τι θα συμβούλευες κάποιον που θα ήθελε να ασχοληθεί με τον επιχρωματισμό;

Έχεις κάποια έργα σε εξέλιξη, ποια θα είναι τα επόμενά σου βήματα;

Ποια η ανταπόκριση που λαμβάνεις από όσους βλέπουν τα έργα σου;

The Italian Savoia-Marchetti SM aircraft 79 «Sparviero» at the bottom of Poros Island, Greece

Photos: Kostas Mylonakis
www.wetklik.gr

An important historical discovery, the first Italian aircraft of World War II which was located in Greece was documented photographically by the diving team of Anthony Grafas.

It is a three-engined bomber Savoia - Marchetti SM 79 'Sparviero ", ("Hawk"), which was originally identified a few years ago, by the professional diver Noulis Spourlakos at a depth of 59 meters, at the southeast coast of Poros, just 200 meters from the shore and was researched and identified almost immediately upon discovery, by divers George Karelas and Kostas Milionis.

The aircraft was an Italian bomber, which was used by the Italian Royal Air Force during World War II. The wreck is sitting on a sandy seabed at a maximum depth of 59 and a minimum of 57 meters, at the southeast of Poros.

According to the researches made by Ferdinando D'Amico for the UFR Team, the Greek group of professional sea divers who found the plane, the plane should/could be the MM. 22293 coded "B2-09" of the ANR Torpedo-bomber unit, lost in the night of 4/5 August 1944.

On that night, eight S.79s of "Gruppo Buscaglia" took off from Eleusis airfield for a mission against an Allied convoy of 30 merchant ships escorted by 4 warships NW of Tolemaide (today Ad Dirsyah, Libya).

Due to the bad weather, only three S.79s found and attacked the convoy, claiming three hits on the merchant ship "Samsylarna" which sunk. They were the S.79s of Ten. Merani, Ten. Morselli and Ten. De Lieto.

According to the unit's Diary "…five aircraft made it back safely to Eleusis airfield, with one damaged due to the left undercarriage not extending correctly. One S.79 landed in Crete, one resulted missing off Crete. The last S.79 ditched due to lack of fuel near Argos; the crew was unhurt and was safely rescued…"

The members of the crew on board of MM. 22293 on that mission were : Pilot - Ten. Marcello Perina; 2nd Pilot - Ten. Gianfranco Neri; Engineer - 1° Av. Mot. Marcello Manfrino; Wireless - Serg. Marc. Giuseppe Apolloni; Armourer - Av. A. U. Arm. Franco Zanchi. All escaped unhurt from the ditching.

The axis of the fuselage of the aircraft is pointing northwest, about 30 degrees.

The team of Anthony Grafas identified two of the machine guns of the aircraft, one which is intact at the roof of the fuselage, while the other on the right side of the cockpit.

The airplane engines are in excellent condition and the fact that the propellers of the engines are not bent, advocates that the aircraft made an emergency ditching, due to lack of fuel.

The fuselage of the aircraft has been altered over the years and the strong benthic coatings.

The two wings of the aircraft are visible in their place. In addition to the frame we can see the fuel tanks and the wheels which have been kept in a flight position.

The instruments, the display panel of the cockpit, have remained in place, though the intense benthic coating does not make them highly visible.

Technical characteristics of the aircraft:

Type: Bomber aircraft

Manufacturer: SIAI - Marchetti

Length: 16.20 meters

Wingspan: 21.20 meters

Height: 4.10 meters

Weight (empty): 7.610 kg

Maximum takeoff weight: 12,500 kg

Engines: Three radial AlfaRomeo 126 RC (nine cylinders)

Maximum speed: 434 km per hour

Autonomy: 1990 km

Maximum height: 7,000 meters

Crew: 5 persons

Indicative armament: Three machine guns of 12.7 mm, two machine guns of 7.7 mm., Two torpedoes with 200kg warheads each.

Dimitris Galon, Historical Researcher
"The Savoia - Marchetti SM 79 is for all those involved with historic shipwrecks in Greece, a major benchmark.

The particular reason that makes it so important is the fact that it is the first Italian aircraft of World War II which was located in the Greek territory.

I hope and pray this finding remain so for many more years, until the final absorption of the natural environment. "

"Alexis Tsamouris, who dived with me on this dive, was almost certainly the sinking of the plane was the only place we had been looking for.

We decided to dive into two groups with underwater scooters in order to cover as most bottom area as we could and agreed to open just enough to look each other. When we got to the bottom and start researching in the third minute I saw the torch of Alexis to wave from afar.

On the motion of the lens I immediately understood that he had found the plane . Unique feelings when I arrived next to him in the next minute, I immediately lifted the camera and started photographing the wreck. "

Anthony Grafas, filmmaker, team leader
"The research to identify an aircraft is inherently very difficult. The target is very small, many times disintegrated."

Vickers Wellington: A rare WW2 treasure at the bottom of the Aegean Sea, Greece

PHOTOS: LENA TSOPOUROPOULOU
www.wreckdiving.gr

The Vickers Wellington bomber found in Sifnos Island at the Cyclades, Greece, is one of the few wrecks of its type -if not the only one- that is preserved in such an excellent condition.

Another forgotten page from the years of World War II was discovered thanks to the efforts of a team of Greek divers who located and identified the wreck of a Vickers Wellington British bomber, which ditched in the Aegean back in 1943.

Nicolas Vassilatos, Lena Tsopouropoulou, Antonis Chatziantoniou, Sarantis Malafouris, George Karelas and Konstantinos Milionis, dove and photographed the best preserved wreck of its type worldwide.

The historic aircraft wreck

At 8.00 pm, on November 7, 1943 the twin engined bomber took off from Libya, with a mission to attack nazi shipping in Naxos Island, Cyclades, Greece.

A ship was detected at the port of Naxos and flying at a very low altitude the aircraft began its attack.

They faced very dense antiaircraft fire but the crew decided to try a second attack during which flak hit the the fuselage, the right wing and the engine.

The pilot tried ditching some time later.

Five days before the full moon of November 1943, the pilot had enough light from the moon to attempt a successful ditching at sea, close to the island of Sifnos, Cyclades, Greece in the calm night of the Aegean Sea, as later reported by survivors.

All of the crew of the aircraft survived, managing to come ashore.

After wandering in the Aegean islands, they eventually escaped to Egypt with the help of Greek and British commandos who were in the nearby island of Serifos.

EYE WITNESSES ACCOUNTS
LENA TSOPOUROPOULOU, underwater photographer: "The clarity of the Aegean waters, even at a great depth, allowed taking pictures depicting the aircraft in all its splendor.

It is an amazing spectacle, which takes us many decades ago. The situation of the wreck is indeed optimal, as shown in the pictures and is probably the only of its type worlwide that has been identified so far in such good condition."

GEORGE KARELAS, diver: "The research of important wrecks of the two great wars is our target at wreckdiving.gr.

It is a difficult task since major unexplored shipwrecks that have not been identified nowadays lie mostly below 70 meters under the surface of the sea. When we talk about searching undiscovered wrecks of airplanes of WWII things become even more difficult.

Small targets, usually difficult weather conditions, even more frequently uncertain outcome, since on the one hand trawlers easily destroy airplanes which are at the bottom and to find an aircraft in good condition, it has to ditch smoothly into the sea in ideal conditions and not to have crashed.

It is also important for aircrafts that have been discovered at the Greek seas that they are still at risk from trawlers and nothing is done by the state and the hydrographic service to inform professional fishermen and amateurs for their protection".

Pilot: ADAMS, Robert Bob Watson

Born January 22, 1921 in Windsor, Ontario, Bob died February 10, 2003 at the age of 82, from complications arising from heart disease and cancer.

Bob started Adams Rent-All in 1967, with his first store on Avenue Road. The business grew to include six stores in the Toronto area.

He retired in 1989 upon selling the business. An active member of the Rental Association of Canada until his death, he served as president in 1973 and 1974.

The son of Dr. Frederick Adams and Essie (nee Watson), Bob was a Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

In November 1943, his Wellington aircraft was shot down while bombing a ship in Naxos harbour, Greece, and for the next six weeks he and his crew evaded enemy capture before returning to Allied territory.

In 1965, he became a member of the newly formed Royal Air Forces Escaping Society (Canadian Branch).

Its 140 members were Canadian airmen who, after being shot down over Europe, escaped or evaded capture with the help of the underground.

The Society's purpose was to honour and assist the individuals who guided airmen to safety, and who often suffered from imprisonment and torture as a result.

Bob was president of the Society's Canadian Branch in 1995 and 1996. Bob is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Joan (nee Berkeley); his children John, Patricia, and Mary; his sons-in-law, Lawrence Solomon and Steve Douglas; and his granddaughters Essie and Catharine.

He will be missed dearly by them, and by his many friends. Bob is predeceased by his brothers, Frederick Coulson and John Charles, both R. C. A. F. pilots, who were killed in action in 1941 and 1945.

A celebration of Bob Adams' life will be held on February 23, at 2900 Yonge Street. All who knew him and his family are welcome to drop by, anytime from 1: 00 pm until 5: 00 pm. If desired, donations can be made to Toronto's West Park Healthcare Centre in Bob's memory.

Vickers Wellington

The Wellington was one of the most successful British bombers in the Second World War.

It began service with the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1938 and was the only aircraft manufactured throughout the war in different variations and remained in service after the war ended.

The originality of the aircraft was its frame, made of a complex combination of triangles named geodetic construction.

The frame, other than light-weight, proved particularly durable, which helped the Wellingtons to withstand the blows whereas other aircraft would have been destroyed.

Vickers built 11.461 bombers of this type, most of any other type of bomber built by Britain. Today, only two surviving Wellingtons are exposed in museums.

Crew 6
Length 19.68 meters
Wingspan 26,26 meters
Speed (maximum) 400 kph
Altitude (max) 4848 meters
Engines 2 Bristol Hercules Mark XVII
Armament six machine guns 0.303 in
Could carry bombs weighing a total of more than 2000 kg. Some of the aircrafts carried an air torpedo.
