Averoff: An insider's view on the famous Greek armored cruiser - New story out soon!

Georgios Averof is a modified Pisa-class armored cruiser built in Italy for the Royal Hellenic Navy in the first decade of the 20th century.

The ship served as the Greek flagship during most of the first half of the century. Although popularly known as a battleship in Greek, she is in fact an armored cruiser, the only ship of this type still in existence.

In 1984 the Navy decided to restore her as a museum, and in the same year she was towed to Palaio Faliro, where she is anchored as a functioning floating museum.

She is berthed at Trocadero quay, next to Faliro Marina.

  1. I look forward to reading more. Although living in northern France now, I am a native of Northern Ireland. Belatedly the powers that be are finally restoring the Great War cruiser HMS Caroline, a survivor of the Battle of Jutland, in the north Sea. Badly maintained and much modified over her nearly 100 year's lifetime, and locally nicknamed "The Concrete Cruiser", finally she is being restored to at least part of her former glory, and opening as a floating museum. I hope the Northern Ireland government and body that will run the ship/museum, will do as good a job as the Greek authorities. Bonne chance - Good Luck for the future for this grand old lady.
